What is WMC?

The Cross-boundary Wealth Management Connect ("WMC") is an initiative jointly implemented by the regulator of Hong Kong, Macau and Mainland China, which aiming to facilitate cross-boundary investment by individual residents in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area ("GBA").

WMC allows eligible individual GBA residents to make cross-boundary investment in wealth management products distributed by banks in GBA. Through WMC, individual retail investors can enjoy the considerable degree of flexibility to open and operate cross-boundary investment accounts directly, through a convenient channel, and to choose their preferred products.

BEA launches the Cross-boundary Wealth Management Connect services – Southbound.

Under Southbound Wealth Management Connect, residents of mainland GBA cities can invest in eligible investment products distributed by The Bank of East Asia, Limited ("BEA") by opening designated investment accounts with BEA.
Southbound Scheme
(For Eligible Mainland Investors)
Eligible Investor:
  • Assessed by BEA as not being a vulnerable customer;
  • Has full capacity for civil conduct;
  • Valid household registration in any of the 9 GBA cities1 in mainland China or can provide at least 5 years’payment record of social security or personal tax in any of those cities;
  • Has at least 2 years’ investment experience and has own at least RMB 1 million of net household financial assets in the past 3 months; or held at least RMB 2 million of household financial assets in the past 3 months;
  • Is investing in his/her personal capacity, but not as joint-name or a corporate customer, and should not authorized a third party to operate the account;
  • Has valid Entry-exit Permit for Travelling to or from Hong Kong and Macau, or valid PRC passport; and
  • Has no WMC dedicated remittance and investment accounts with other banks or financial institutions
Eligible Wealth Management Products provided by BEA
Funds domiciled in Hong Kong and authorized by the Securities and Futures Commission of Hong Kong, which are assessed as "non-complex" and "low" risk to "medium" risk by BEA (excluding products listed and traded on the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited).
RMB, HKD and foreign currency deposits.
Account Opening Procedure
An eligible Mainland investor should open a dedicated remittance account at a designated branch of The Bank of East Asia (China) Limited (“BEA CN”) in the GBA. He/She can apply for a dedicated BEA investment account by attestation at BEA CN branches in GBA.
The dedicated investment account of BEA and the dedicated remittance account of BEA CN are paired, with closed-loop management of funds flow between the accounts. 
The mainland investor then will be able to remit funds (subject to individual investor quota of RMB 1 million and the scheme’s aggregate quota of RMB 150 billion) through the dedicated remittance account on the Mainland to the dedicated investment account in Hong Kong to invest in BEA’s eligible wealth management products via the dedicated investment account.
