Greater China Business (Ex-Hong Kong)

BEA first opened its Shanghai Branch in 1920. In April 2007, BEA established The Bank of East Asia (China) Limited (“BEA China”), one of the first locally-incorporated wholly foreign-invested banks in the Chinese Mainland. BEA China is authorised to provide a full range of banking and financial services to a broad customer base that includes local and foreign residents and enterprises. Headquartered in Shanghai, BEA China operates one of the most extensive branch networks of any foreign bank in the Chinese Mainland.

BEA China has built a reputation as a pioneer in the provision of value-added banking services:

  • Among the first batch of foreign banks to have been qualified as a direct participating bank of the Cross-border Interbank Payment System (“CIPS”) for cross-border RMB payments (2015)
  • One of the first foreign banks to commence business in the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone (2014)
  • First foreign bank to issue RMB retail bonds in Hong Kong (2009)
  • First foreign bank to launch RMB debit cards and credit cards in the Chinese Mainland (2008)

Overseas, the Bank maintains an active presence in Southeast Asia, the United Kingdom (“UK”), and the United States (“US”).

BEA serves clients in Southeast Asia through its branches in Singapore and its representative office in Kuala Lumpur.

In the UK, BEA operates branches in London, Manchester, and Birmingham, which serve the banking needs of the Chinese communities in these cities. In the US, BEA operates federal branches in New York and Los Angeles, which mainly provide wholesale banking services.
